Online EIR Submission

Ontario estate representatives can submit an Estate Information Return directly to the Ministry of Finance from within Estateably. This article walks through completing and submitting the return, including how to handle resubmissions.

Ontario estate files only

Before you start

Complete data entry on the file before beginning the submission process. The submission screen lets you review information but not edit it directly. Confirm the following sections are accurate and up to date:

  • Intake (Certificate Information, Deceased Information)

  • Contacts (Estate Representatives)

  • Inventory (Real Estate in Ontario, Bank Accounts, Investments, Vehicles, Other Assets)

If anything needs to be corrected, update the relevant section of the file first, then return here.

Submit the return

  1. Open the estate file and select EIR Submission from the left-side navigation menu.

  2. Click Get Started.

  3. Review each section on the screen — this is everything that will be transmitted to the Ministry:

    • Certificate Information

    • Deceased Information

    • Representative Information

    • Real Estate in Ontario

    • Bank Accounts

    • Investments

    • Vehicles

    • Other Assets

To correct any information, click Edit on the relevant section. After saving your changes, return to EIR Submission and click Get Started again to continue.

  4. Complete the About This Submission fields below the review sections:

    • Is this an amended return? Select Yes if an EIR has already been submitted to the Ministry for this estate. Select No for an original filing.

    • Deposit amount, if applicable. Enter the deposit amount paid at time of probate, if one was made.

    • Preferred language. Select English or French. This determines the language in which the Ministry receives the submission.

    • Email confirmation. Check the box and enter an email address to receive a confirmation once Estateably delivers the submission to the Ministry.

The Payment Information section below displays a read-only summary of the Taxable Estate Value, Total Tax Payable, Deposit Amount, and Tax Payable. These values are calculated from the file and cannot be edited from this screen.

  5. Attach any supporting documents in the Supporting Documents section. Drag files into the upload area or click to browse.

    • Maximum file size: 10 MB per document

    • Accepted file types: .PDF, .DOC, .DOCX, .MSG, .XLSX, .XLS, .BMP, .TIFF, .JPEG, .PNG

    • No limit on number of documents

Uploaded files appear in the Documents section of the file under the EIR Submission folder after submission.

  6. Click Submit EIR at the bottom of the screen.

Estateably collects submissions throughout the day and transmits them to the Ministry overnight. The Ministry receives the submission the next business day.

After submitting

After you click Submit EIR, the Submission Scheduled screen confirms the filing is queued. A Submission Summary shows the deceased's name, scheduled date and time, court file number, court location, and payment details. No further action is required at this point.

Return to the EIR Submission section the next business day to confirm delivery. When the status shows Submission Sent, the filing has been successfully delivered to the Ministry. The Ministry processes filings within 24 hours and contacts the Estate Representative directly once processing is complete.

Resubmit a return

A Resubmit button is available from both the Submission Scheduled and Submission Sent screens.

  • If the original submission is still scheduled (not yet sent): The resubmission overwrites the original. Only the most recent version is sent to the Ministry.

  • If the original submission has already been sent: The resubmission is filed as an amended return. The Ministry receives it as a separate, additional filing. In the About This Submission section, select Yes for Is this an amended return?

Conclusion

Your EIR is submitted and queued for overnight delivery to the Ontario Ministry of Finance. If you have questions about the status of your submission or encounter an issue, contact Estateably support.
