Where can I track market value history in Estateably?
There are three ways: directly on an asset, directly on a holding, or automatically through statement import. The method you use depends on how your file is set up and whether statement import is enabled for your organization.
How do I add a new valuation to an asset?
Open the asset, click the three-dot menu, and select View market value history. From there, click Add new valuation, enter the date and the updated value, add any notes, and click Save. The asset reflects the new value immediately.
How do I add a new valuation to a holding?
Open the account, go to the Holdings tab, and select the holding. Click Market value history at the top of the holding details panel, then click Add new valuation, enter the date and value, and click Save.
What is the Market valuation date field when adding an asset?
When you first add an asset, the Market valuation date field records the date of the most recent valuation you have on hand. This sets the baseline entry in the asset's market value history. You can add subsequent valuations later through the three-dot menu.
Can market value history be updated automatically?
Yes, if statement import is enabled on your account. When you import a subsequent investment statement, Estateably reads the new statement and updates the valuation on the relevant holding automatically.
How does market value history affect reports?
When you generate a report, Estateably uses the latest valuation for each asset or holding as of the report's end date. The report shows the principal balance on hand, carry value, and inventory value for that period.
Can I track market value history for both trusts and estates?
Yes. The process is the same for both. When adding an asset, select Funding asset for a trust or Date of death asset for an estate — market value history works the same way from there.
Will my existing assets lose their value, or get a full history added, once Market Value History is turned on?
Neither. Every asset keeps the value it has today — nothing is added retroactively and nothing is removed. Assets start building a dated history going forward, from the point you (or an action like a sale or import) record a new valuation.
Will my existing assets get their past valuation history filled in automatically?
No. Turning the feature on doesn't create any valuations or fill in past history. The single value stored today has no reliable date attached to it, so the system can't know which past date it belonged to — inventing a history from it could produce inaccurate dates and figures. Each asset instead starts building its history going forward.
Do I need to add valuations for my reports to reflect different values across periods?
The feature works immediately and your current values stay the same, but yes — you need to add dated valuations for reports to reflect different values across different periods. Without a dated valuation, every report uses the asset's current market value regardless of the report date. To have a 2022 report show the 2022 value and a 2024 report show the 2024 value, add a valuation dated for each period.
Will anything change in my current lists and reports the moment Market Value History is enabled?
No. On day one, your lists and reports show the same values as before. New dated valuations only appear as you or the system record them going forward.
Which assets and holdings does Market Value History apply to?
Most valued assets and investment holdings, including equities, mutual funds and ETFs, fixed income, private company stakes, collectables, real estate, vehicles, and receivables. It doesn't apply to bank or investment account containers, liabilities, or GICs tracked by value — those don't carry a market value history.
What happens if I try to add two valuations on the same date?
Each item keeps one valuation per date. If you manually add a valuation on a date that already has one, you'll see a message that a valuation already exists for that date. If the second valuation comes from an action like a sale or an import, the system replaces the existing one for that date instead.
Can I edit or delete a valuation after I've added it?
Yes, if you added it yourself — those valuations can be freely edited or deleted. Valuations created automatically from a transaction have some protections.
Can I still add valuations after an asset has been fully sold?
You can add valuations dated on or before the final sale, but not after it. Trying to add one after the sale date shows a message explaining that the asset has been fully disposed of.
What happens to a holding's valuation history when I transfer it to another account?
Both the sending and receiving holding get a valuation on the transfer date. Any valuations dated after the transfer move to the receiving account, since that's where the holding now lives.
Can I add valuations to the old account after transferring a holding out?
Not for dates after the transfer — you'll be directed to add those to the account that received the holding. Likewise, you can't add a valuation to the receiving holding for a date before it arrived there.
How does a report decide which value to use for a given date?
For each asset or holding, the report finds the value as of the report date in this order: if the item has no dated valuations yet, it uses the single value stored on the item (the same behavior as before the feature). Otherwise, it uses the most recent valuation dated on or before the report date. If the item has valuations but none fall on or before the report date, the report falls back to the cost basis for that date.
Why does a report sometimes show the market value equal to the cost/carry value?
That's the signal that no valuation was recorded for that date, or any date before it. Once an item has a dated valuation, a report for an earlier date has no market figure to use, so instead of guessing, the report shows the market value equal to the carry value — an easy visual cue that no market value was recorded for that period.
Will Estateably warn me if a report is missing valuations for the period?
A warning that lists items without a valuation on the report's end date, with quick links to update them, is planned but not available yet.
Does the Original Asset List use Market Value History?
No. The Original Asset List always shows Date-of-Death values and doesn't use market value history.
How does Market Value History affect Care & Management fee calculations?
Care & Management uses the same value lookup at the start and end of each period, averages those two figures, and applies your Care & Management percentage across the portion of the year the period covers. Valuations dated in the middle of a period don't shift the start or end figures.
What does the "As of" date next to a market value mean?
For an item with dated valuations, your lists show its current total market value along with an "As of" date — the date of the most recent valuation being used. Items without any dated valuations don't show an "As of" line.
