Add and edit a beneficiary profile

Add a beneficiary to a file so their details appear on forms and letters and they can be selected for distributions. This article explains how to add and edit beneficiary profiles.

Add a beneficiary

  1. Go to the Contacts section of the file.

  2. Click Add New in the top-right corner.

  3. Enter the required information:

    • Legacy Type (required) — Residual or Legacy (see below)

    • Name

    • Contact information (phone, email, mailing address)

    • If Residual: allocation percentage or fraction

    • Relationship to the deceased

    • Whether the beneficiary is a minor, mentally incapable, or not being served

  4. If applicable, also enter:

    • Name as it appears in the Will (if different)

    • SIN/SSN

    • Date of birth

    • Date of death

    • Cash bequest

    • Money owed to the deceased

    • Legal representative information

  5. Click Add.

Legacy Type explained:

  • Residual — entitled to the residue of the estate, based on the will or intestacy laws

  • Legacy — entitled to a specific cash gift or bequest

Additional optional fields may appear below the Notes section depending on your jurisdiction.

Tip: If a beneficiary is also an acting executor, click the three-dot menu next to their profile, select Make executor, and their details are automatically copied to the Executors section.

Edit a beneficiary

  1. Click the three-dot menu next to the beneficiary.

  2. Select Edit.

  3. Make your changes and click Save.
