Select the right asset class and sub-class for a holding

When adding a holding, use the Asset Class and Sub-class fields to classify it correctly for reporting. This article explains when each field is required and lists all available values.

When defining a new holding, use the Asset Class and Sub-class fields to properly classify the holding for data accuracy and reporting.

  • Start by selecting an Asset Class.

  • If more detail is needed, choose a sub-class from the refined list. This ensures each holding is classified at the right level — whether broad like Fixed Income or specific like GIC.

  • If nothing fits, select Other and free-type the value you want.

A few helpful tips

  • Sub-Class is required if there's a list of options available. For example, if you choose Equity, you must also pick Common Shares, Stock, or another associated sub-class.

  • No Sub-Class needed for Cash or Accrued Interest — they're simple enough on their own.

  • When in doubt, pick "Other." Not every holding fits neatly into a box. Select Other and free-type the value you want to use.

Asset Class and Sub-Class values

Historical holding data — already migrated

For existing holdings in already-created files, old asset class values have been automatically re-mapped to the new Asset Class and Sub-Class structure. You don't need to update anything manually.
